Housing Quaker & Senegal Parrot Together

It’s hard enough to house a parrot in a cage let alone two especially when they come from different continents (Senegal’s are from Africa and Quakers are from South America). We just received a call from a woman who bought a bird cage from us less than two years ago. At the time she was about to acquire a Quaker and Senegal parrot – both just recently weened.

The birds have been getting along famously for the past year and a half but just recently the Quaker started to get a bit aggressive. From the conversation we think the Quaker is a male because he’s spending a lot of time building and nesting which is what male Quakers do although we can’t be sure.

Like many of us times are tight and although she very much would like to get a second birdcage it’s not in the budget. We recommended a few fixes that we think might help the situation.

1) Create privacy areas in the rear corners of the cage. This can be done with branches, toys or sleep huts

2) The birds are kept in the kitchen and getting 12 hours of daylight but she said that they were not getting a complete 12 hours of darkness for sleep and this can make a bird a bit cranky. So we suggested making sure the cage gets covered or moved to another room to provide 12 hours of darkness.

3) Lastly, the Quaker may be getting a bit hormonal and it is always difficult to have this discussion of the indelicate subject but sometimes boys must be boys and by offering your male bird something that he could love can be very useful in calming down the hormones. This can be a small stuffed animal or a wiffleball either of which may help the situation. The video below illustrates this point.

Island Fruit Treat Stick for Bourke’s parakeets

Click for info on Higgins Island Food Treat Stick for Birds

Dear Windy City Parrot,

Overall, I was happy with the order. My only concern is the treat sticks I redeemed my points for are made for large hookbills and we have Bourke’s parakeets. If memory serves me correctly they were listed under the small birds section. Are these safe to give to our ‘keets? You may also want to check and see what section they are listed under. As always, love the customer service and follow-up!

Thanks,

Amy

Dear Amy

I am back in the office and able to answer your question now.

The treat stick. Island Fruit.

It is indeed for larger birds and I checked and it is not shown in any categories for small birds.

More than likely you clicked on a link to it from another treat and it took you to it, but it was not in a small bird category. The listing description states for medium to large birds as does the packaging for the treat stick.

Yes, it is safe for your Bourke’s parakeets, but they may not eat all the pieces, you can smash it up for them and feed in a dish, they will enjoy picking out the bits they can, or you can give the stick to a friend with a larger bird.

We will look at the titles for the sticks and see if we can add bird size to it to help those who click on it without reading the listing.

Thank you for the heads up and the review.

Why Weighing Your Bird is So Important

One of the best ways to ensure your birds good health is to weigh it on a regular basis. By using a good quality gram scale (you don’t have to spend a lot of money on it) you will have one of the best preventative health tools that can provide red flags to any potential problems before they develop into something a bit more serious. We don’t recommend using spring based scale used for measuring kitchen ingredients because we are seeking accuracy.

Your avian vet should have a record of your birds weight. If not, just start weiging your bird at least once a week. What should you look for in terms of weight change? Best practices dictate that a change in weight of 10% in either direction should alert you to get in touch with your veterinarian. Weight loss can indicate any number of things including infectious diseases like aspergillosis, infestation with parasites, competing for food with other birds in the cage, tumors and even beak problems.

Keep in mind the bird might still be eating and at the same time, drop in weight if it is ill. In many cases birds cannot take in enough calories to ward off infection and maintain their weight. This doesn’t always happen rapidly but sometimes gradually especially if your bird has a low-grade infection. If your bird experiences weight loss rapidly, this is a red flag and time to call your vet. Conversely if the weight loss is gradual this can also be an indicator that your bird is not well.

Many people say “my bird looks just fine” and that can be a problem because one of the best natural defense mechanisms bird’s have is to not look sick so they don’t look weak to their prey. It’s not uncommon especially for small species like budgies to just keel over without any warning whatsoever.

If your bird gains weight very rapidly this might indicate that they may be preparing to lay an egg. Birds that start drinking a lot of water, possibly become little territorial in the cage, plucking chest feathers, and if you’re seeing large bad smelling poop, chances are your bird is getting ready to lay eggs.

Many of our customers are concerned about finding the right kind of perch to put on their scale in order to way larger birds especially Macaws with long tails. It’s really not a big issue and we show you how to do it in the video below.

Free Hyacinth Parrots Scam

I’ve been quite busy lately but I always have time to follow a great scam. I am publishing this as a warning to any of you who think that this is for real. If it looks too good to be true it is!I responded to a Twitter “tweet” offering to Hyacinth parrots for adoption at absolutely no cost. I’m going to publish the e-mails sequentially so you can see how this scam plays out. By the third day they were already calling and asking for money. I’ve included images and document they sent to me.

FYI – Even in a down market, which we’re in, it’s hard to find a single Hyacinth Parrot for less than $10,000 USD

I spoke to someone allegedly calling from some African Airline. I finally got bored and got busy with other things I stopped answering the calls but they left more than 12 voice mails.

It is illegal to import parrots into the United States. They never answered my question as to how they were doing this legally – that’s because it can’t be done. The following is some of the biggest bull#*$t you’ll every read.

Lots of pictures, they even sent me pictures of the airplane!

Mark

what is the flight number – I’d like to watch for them – also where do I validate the change of ownership documents & pay the bill?

Mitch

You have to validate the ownership documents before the birds can be put on the flight, after that all flight details will be emailed to you by the airport so that you can watch over them.So just go through the shipping notification the airport send to you,you will see directions how to get the money over to them,so that your birds can be put on the last flight, and they also told me that the flight will soon be taking off.so you have to be fast ok.

Mark-

I just checked with US customs – it’s illegal to import bird into the US – how do we overcome this?
Hi Mitch ,
Good morning, how is your family doing? i hope you both are perparing for the arrival of Teddy and Lisa,i just called the airport to ask after the birds ,and to appologize for the delay, since they did not take off yesterday,so i have arrange for the second flight so that they can take off today. Also Mitch,i want you to understand that these birds are from the USA,remember i did relocate with them when i was traveling to Cameroon, and they have been here just for two weeks till now that i want them back to US.
Please you need not to border much about any customs issue, cos all that have been taking care already, you know ,i work with the BASC GLOBAL SUPPLING COMPANY LTD,and have all the rights and legal documents to import and export where ever i want into USA.So you don’t have to worry about them being held for any reason, cos the will be traveling along with all their documents, all that has already been deposite with the birds at the airport,so all you needed to do was just to validate the ownership documents before the procced with shipping, that is to make you the rightful owner of the birds so that, when they arrive at your airport ,it will be easy for the carrier to deliver them at your door step.
So please all you have to do now is just to get the money over to the airport so that they birds can take off today with the second flight to your location, the flight details will be given to you after they most have left ok,also i did tried calling your phone number but is not going through,so please you have to give me a valid number so that i can get it over to the airport cos they will have to call and notify you on the arrival of the birds at your door step.
Please i will be waiting to hear from you as soon as you are through at the airport. Also as i told you that the female birds will soon start laying her eggs,it will be good if we get them over to you so that you can take care of her before anything.
Thanks and hope you understand.
God bless you and you wife,do extend my greetings to her.
 Mark.

You can’t make this stuff up

I’ll say it again

Proper Size Thermo Perch for Scarlet Macaw

Hi Elaine

We received your order.

Upon examination of your order, we see you ordered a MEDIUM thermo perch for a bird that is too large for a medium thermo perch. A scarlet Macaw will need a LARGE perch.

The medium could break and is not thick enough for such a beefy bird. The larger perch is required for such a large bird so it does not have to grip it so tight to hang on.

We have your order on hold until we hear from you. We hope to hear from you soon.

Catherine Tobsing President Windy City Parrot

I ordered the medium as I was afraid the large one was too big in diameter for him. But if you think he should have the large one then by all means please change my order to the large perch and go ahead and charge my card the extra amount. If you need me to cancel this order and do a reorder, I’ll be happy to do that.

He’s only 7months old, but I think his feet are full grown.

Thank you for your help with this order.

Elaine

The large perches do look too large in comparison to the normal wood perches your bird would use, but since it is heated, it needs a wider area for the heat to be dispersed more evenly and not cause hot spots by him/her holding it too tightly as the medium would be small for his feet.

We do need to speak for your credit card info for the larger size price difference.

This perch will also ship mid next week as they are very popular at this time due to winter coming.

Please call me toll free 877-287-0810 and do you have a phone number that we can reach you as needed.

Dearest Catherine-

Thank you again for suggesting the size change on the thermal perch. I had never bought one before and it’s nice to know that you have extended info about the products you sell and the best way to use them.

Romeo (my 8 month old scarlet macaw) used it last night and was not at all bashful about “breaking it in”! I found him fast asleep on it still this morning when I got up a little early. I don’t know if he really needs it, but I feel better adding it to his cage, just in case.

Again, Caterine, thank you for your personal attention to my order. I don’t see this kind of service much anymore and I greatly appreciate your help. Service like this will keep me coming back and tell my bird owner friends about you as well!

Happy Holidays to you and yours-

Elaine & Romeo

Getting your bird play with bird toys

Preening Bird Toy by Prevue Pet - Calypso Creations Mariachi 62565
How many times do you get a new toy for your bird, stick it in the bird cage close the door and then you go and work on your computer or watch television?

Then you wonder why your bird chewed your television remote or the wire to your mouse. Introducing a new bird toy into your bird’s cage is no guarantee that he or she will engage it. To complicate this people will introduce new items into the bird cage when they get home from work as the sun is going down.

The problem with introducing new items in the bird cages around sundown is the shadows that can be thrown which may scare the birds or the birds may become phobic over these new items. That said as a general rule before you introduce anything new into your bird cage is to bring it to your bird’s attention.

Hold up in front of him or her in the high childlike voice tell him how wonderful it’s going to be playing with this new toy and you go ahead and play with it as well. By doing this you are showing your bird that this your toy and by you playing with it they might like playing with it too.

By not spending a couple of minutes showing your bird how important this toy is, they’re just going to want to play with the toys that you are playing with – your computer keyboard and your TV remote

9 Lovebird Species

2 Peach face Lovebirds

They’re called Lovebirds because of their monogamous pair bonding. Paired Lovebirds will sit beside each other for hours on end. In the wild, Lovebirds live in small flocks. They will typically live from 10 to 15 yearsThere are nine subspecies of Lovebirds:

Peach-faced Lovebird, Masked Lovebird, Fischers Lovebird, Lilian’s Lovebird, Black Cheeked Lovebird, Abyssinian Lovebird, Red-faced Lovebird, Madagasccar Lovebird, Black-collared Lovebird

Because Lovebirds like to bond they can have long and strong relationships with humans. They’re snugglers and may even preen you. They’re not good talkers but can have a loud voice for a little bird. Lovebirds lake to bathe and sun themselves.

Lovebirds like different foods like pellets ,recommended, fruits (sweetcorn, apple, pomegranate, strawberries, etc.), and vegetables (broccoli, carrot, mustard seed, watercress, squash, etc.) and seed (a mix of 14 varieties is recommended, plus wild seeding grasses, sesame seed, etc.).

These colorful small birds are inquisitive, playful, active and smart They range in size from 5 – 6 inches in length and from about 40 to 60 grams in weight.. They love to chew (with precision) and will hang when playing with toys. They can be vocal especially early in the morning
